AGELE Awards


We invite AGELE members to nominate gender equity colleagues for the following awards. Please note the following requirements for all three AGELE Awards:

  • Applicants/Nominees must have current membership status in AGELE.
  • Applications are due to the Awards Committee Chair by April 25th of the year the award will be given.
  • With the approval of the Steering Committee, the winning applicant/nominee of each award will be notified.

Barb Landers Memorial Grant
The Barb Landers Memorial Grant was established by AGELE in 1990 to acknowledge the actions of its membership on behalf of students. Grants of up to $1,500 will be awarded annually for projects that demonstrate creativity in addressing the goal of gender equity in education. The grantee is asked to share the success of the funded project with AGELE members at the following year’s conference. The full application can be found on the AGELE website. Proposals must address one or more of the five AGELE goals:

  • Leadership and Advocacy;
  • Research and Development;
  • Professional Development and Renewal;
  • Collaboration and Networking;
  • Outreach

Shirley McCune Award
The Shirley McCune Award was established in 1994 to honor Dr. Shirley McCune, a co-founder of AGELE, and the first recipient of the award. The award, a perpetual plaque and a certificate is presented annually to an AGELE member who has made extraordinary contributions to the field of gender equity. Nominees will have demonstrated proficiency in the field of gender equity and have made significant contributions to the cause of gender equity in one or more of the following areas:

  • Advocacy
  • Dedication, demonstrated through vocation, paid work, volunteer work (or both)
  • Innovation in Curriculum, Organization, or Theory
  • Inspiration
  • Leadership
  • Publications, Writing (fiction and non-fiction)
  • Research

Dolores Grayson Research Award
The Dolores Grayson Award was established in 2006 to honor Dr. Dolores Grayson, a charter member of the Association for Gender Equity Leadership in Education (AGELE) and the first recipient of the award. The purpose of the award is to publicize, motivate, encourage, and suggest research-based models for increasing gender equity in education. The award, an individual plaque, is presented annually to an AGELE member who has achieved excellence in scholarship and research related to gender equity in education. The criteria are:

  • Publication of an article in a scholarly (preferably peer reviewed) publication; or
  • Presentation of research at a professional education meeting such as AERA, NWSA, AAS, etc.; or
  • Publication of a book that links educational research and gender equity best practice in education; or
  • Submission of a dissertation on gender equity in education, approved by the dissertation committee of their graduate school; or
  • A master’s thesis that makes a significant contribution to gender equity in education, and is approved by the thesis committee of their graduate school.
