Is College the Ticket to Women’s Equity?

Dr. Randy Albelda
Professor of Economics, University of Massachusetts-Boston,
Cambridge, MA.

Dr. Albelda is a faculty affiliate with the Center for Social Policy from the UMass Boston Economics Department and also the McCormack Graduate School's Associate Department Chair for Public Policy and Public Affairs. She has worked as research director of the Massachusetts State Senate's Taxation Committee and the legislature's Special Commission on Tax Reform.

She has written on welfare reform, paid family leave policies, racial and gender divisions in occupations, same sex couples and children, the distribution of family income and earnings, and gender and race bias in radical theories of labor market segmentation. Her most recent work includes the edited volumes The Dilemmas of Lone Motherhood: Essays from Feminist Economics and Lost Ground: Poverty, Welfare Reform, and Beyond. Besides these writings, she is also the author or co-author of over twenty articles, ten book chapters and dozens of policy reports. Each year the Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts-Boston honors one faculty member for his or her distinguished scholarship; Dr. Albelda received this honor in 2004.

Her research and teaching covers a broad range of economic policies affecting low-income families.

 

Examining the Gender and Race Connection Through Research on African American Males

Dr. Lucian Yates, III
Dean, Whitlow R. Green College of Education, Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas

Dr. Yates is the Dean of the Whitlow R. Green College of Education at Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas, having recently served as Chair of the School of Education, Kentucky State University. He has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent. He has served in a variety of education roles in four states – Texas, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

He has studied with Dr. Madeline Hunter, Drs. Kenneth and Rita Dunn, Dr. Bernice McCarthy, Ted Sizer, and many more.  He was featured on a call in talk show with Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich, Secretary of Education, Richard Reilly and President, Bill Clinton to discuss school-to-work initiatives.  His role as superintendent was featured in the December 2002 edition of U.S. News and World Report and the January New Yorker. Additionally, he was awarded the Ohio Social Studies Teacher of the Year and the Outstanding Young Professional award.

His research interests have included the areas of administration, achievement gap, learning styles, and teaching students of color.  He has consulted with several school districts around the country in the areas of restructuring, educational reform and Block scheduling.
